American Girl Dolls are actually real people that exhibit the girl's perspective of the American history in the form of a doll. The American Girl product line aims to teach aspects of American history through a six book series that were from the perspective of a nine year-old girl living during that period. Although the books are written for the eight-to-thirteen-year-old target market, they endeavor to cover significant topics such as child labor, child abuse, poverty, racism, slavery, alcoholism, animal abuse, and war in a manner that is appropriate for the understanding and sensibilities of the company's target market.
The concept of making historical dolls started when Pleasant Rowland, educator, writer, and entrepreneur, was looking for dolls as a Christmas gift for her niece. Actually, there are a lot of baby dolls and adult dolls available but she can't find one that is suited for girls in the 8-12 age range. And that is when the thought of creating Pleasant Company's American Girl jumped in.
American Girl dolls are not just lovely toys for kids and women of all ages but they are authentic collectibles of historical girls living in different eras, living different lives and represent the diverse culture of America since 1974 until today. American Girl dolls generally have a story to tell. In every character comes a colorful story of events where that particular girl shares the most precious pieces of her memories and highlights the wonderful story of her life.
The American Girl characters originate from a wide range of "American" experiences across the more than 200 years of American history. American Girl dolls like Kaya, the Native American in 1764, Addy, the escaped slave in 1864, and Kit, the Midwesterner in the Great Depression. These are just some of the many other historical characters who were reborn in their doll form.
The American Girl's history is traced way back in 1986 when Pleasant Rowland started to manufacture a product line of dolls, books, and accessories based on pre-teen girl characters that originally focused on various periods of American history from the viewpoint of girls. However, Rowland's work was originally purchasable via email order order only.
In the same year, Pleasant released her first ever catalog debut dolls which were Samantha Parkington, Kirsten Larson, and Molly McIntire from the concept and design of a German doll-maker, Gotz. Since the release, the company decided to add some new historical characters and expand its line of products which now includes the American Girl magazine, myriad fiction and non-fiction publications, a line of contemporary 18-inch 'American Girl of Today' dolls, and the 'Bitty Baby' and 'Bitty Twin' collection.
The first American Girl Places (stores where the line of American Girl dolls, clothes and accessories can be purchased) opened in Chicago and was then followed by several others in New York and Los Angeles. American Girl Boutique and Bistros (AGB) debuted in 2007. The boutiques are smaller than the main stores; they feature rotating stock and more casual restaurants. There are four to date: at North Point Mall in Alpharetta, Georgia; in Galleria Dallas Mall in Dallas, Texas; Natick Collection in Natick, Massachusetts; and at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota.
The American Girl doll collection has also earned many awards, most notably the Oppenheimer Toy Award which was by the Pleasant Company bagged eight times.
