What's the Difference?
Saline breast implants are filled with – you guessed it – saline solution at the time of surgery. Typically a salt and water-based solution, saline implants have received some criticism for feeling hard and unnatural. However, improved surgical techniques have resulted in more natural-feeling breasts. Your surgeon may recommend having the implant placed behind your pectoral muscle and slightly overfilling it in order to create a more natural result. Saline breast implants are available to women aged 18 and older.
Silicone breast implants arrive pre-filled with silicone gel, a viscous fluid that mimics the feel of human fat. Silicone may result in a more natural feeling and looking implant and are available to women aged 22 and older for breast augmentation.
What are the Risks?
Saline and silicone implants both feature similar surgical risks, including breast pain, potential changes in nipple or breast sensation, infection, scar tissue around the implant, or the need for additional surgery. They also both come alongside risk of implant rupture or leakage; however, if a saline implant ruptures, the solution will be absorbed by your body without any chances of health risks. It will deflate upon rupture and require surgery to remove or replace the silicone shell left behind.
If a silicone implant ruptures, however, it may not be noticed right away – or ever – due to the viscosity of the silicone gel. Though there is no evidence that leaking silicone gel causes long-term health problems, it may eventually result in breast pain or shape abnormalities.
For this reason, the Food and Drug Administration recommends routine MRI scans every two years to monitor silicone breast implants.
Furthermore, breast implants may interfere with your ability to breast-feed your child. You may wish to consider undergoing a Scottsdale breast augmentation procedure after you have had children.
